Why Breathing Matters

Most people assume we breathe due to lack of oxygen. We don't, not primarily. The drive to breathe is triggered by rising carbon dioxide. CO2 tolerance, the body's ability to remain regulated as CO2 builds, determines the quality of that drive. When tolerance is low, breathing becomes faster, more frequent, and more effortful than physiology requires. This work, grounded in Buteyko and Oxygen Advantage® methods, is about recalibrating that threshold.

Breathing is a primary system through which the body regulates stress, energy, and attention. It runs automatically, and it can also be trained. Under sustained pressure, breathing often becomes faster, higher, and more effortful. When this pattern becomes habitual, the nervous system remains in a state of heightened alert and recovery becomes harder.

CO2 tolerance also governs how efficiently oxygen is released from the blood to the cells. When breathing is chronically dysregulated, this delivery is impaired, adding metabolic strain on top of nervous system activation. Restoring functional breathing patterns addresses both simultaneously.

What This Work Develops

This work focuses on restoring efficient, functional breathing and improving the body's capacity to regulate itself under pressure. Training draws on Buteyko and Oxygen Advantage® methods, both grounded in the physiology of CO2 tolerance, nasal breathing, and autonomic regulation, and adapted for professional and everyday contexts.

How It Works

Breathing training begins with an assessment of current breathing patterns, including CO2 tolerance, nasal function, and habitual responses to stress. From this, a structured programme is developed and refined over time. This work is available to individuals, professional teams, and organisations, delivered in-person, online, or hybrid.
